Wintertime in the Pocono Mountains

Wintertime in the Pocono Mountains

Despite the chilly temperatures, wintertime in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania is just as active as the summertime when it comes to ranking as a vacation destination.  Nestled in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania, this area offers a number of great vacation options.  Sundance Vacations maintains two different destinations in the Poconos for you to take advantage of, and better yet, enjoy all of the Poconos best.

Hit the Slopes
If skiing is your thing, there are a lot of choices in the way of ski resorts to keep your skiing options as fresh as the powder you will be shredding down the mountain on.

Camelback Mountain offers 36 trails, which are all lighted for night skiing, as well as 16 lifts to get you and your companions to the top of the mountain.  Along with skiing and snowboarding, Camelback has a number of snow tubing lanes that can be fun for the whole family.  They also offer Pennsylvania’s only Mountain Coaster, a 4,500 foot steel track ride that is said to let you experience the slopes “like never before.”  Camelback is located near Tannersville, Pennsylvania.

The combination of Jack Frost and Big Boulder ski resorts, located near Blakeslee, Pa., has a combined 36 trails for your skiing and snowboarding pleasure.  Also incorporating eight terrain parks, the options are almost limitless with the two parks so close together.  These resorts both also offer snow tubing in their Subaru FUN Zones, which can be great for the people in your party that don’t want to ski.

Shawnee Mountain, located outside of East Stroudsburg, Pa., is positioned right on the Delaware River and has 23 slopes for you to make your way down throughout the day and night.  With two terrain parks and snow tubing as well, you can be sure you will get the most out of a day, should you choose this as your ski destination.

Alpine Mountain is another of the many ski resorts in the area.  Located in Henryville, Pa., the resort offers 21 trails for skiing and snowboarding.  If you are looking for something a little different, Alpine Mountain lives up to their motto of “Ski, Skate & Tube.”  With snow tubing and snowshoeing options as well as the only outdoor ice skating rink in the Poconos, they surely have something for everyone.

Not into skiing?
If you or your whole travel party are not into the ski scene, that’s quite alright.  The Pocono Mountains have a whole other side to them that you may not have known about.

You can always check out the nightlife or spend a day at the Mount Airy Casino, located in Mount Pocono, Pa.  With over 1,800 slot machines and 70 tables for gaming, you can try and hit it big in the casino or spend the day relaxing at the Spa and Salon that is on-site.  Mount Airy also offers a host of shows and nightlife that changes daily.  Comedians, musicians and shows take the stage at night and offer some of the best entertainment in the area.

More in the ways of shows and concerts you can check out the lineup at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, Pa. or at Penn’s Peak in Jim Thorpe, Pa.  Both offer musical concerts of varying genres, stage shows and much more.  Not to mention you can grab dinner before the show at one of the many restaurants in the respective areas.

If shopping is your thing, the Crossings Premium Outlets, located in Tannersville, Pa., may be just the fit for you.  With 100 outlet stores, you just may be able to literally shop until you drop.  Also nearby is the Stroud Mall, located just minutes down the road in Stroudsburg, Pa., that offers more shopping and a movie theater, should you get the itch for a good flick and some popcorn.

If you are looking for a more unique experience, consider visiting the town of Jim Thorpe. There are a number of shops and restaurants in the downtown area that can easily keep you busy for a day.  With historical homes that offer tours, the old prison that offers a tour and museums, you can also make your trip educational.  The town also features a train station that offers train rides through the mountains.  Further entertainment can be found at the historic Mauch Chunk Opera House.
